Making and Remaking Difference (open lecture series)
This open lecture series will explore questions of how the ethnic and racial boundaries that have structured a wide variety of societies have proven elastic and open to negotiation by various actors. Using cases from a diversity of geographical locations and time periods, including early modern India, the modern Nordic region, the United States and the Japanese Empire, these lectures will investigate the different markers, like race, language and religion, that denote boundaries in certain contexts and lack such a function in others.
How do different categories of difference interact and how durable or malleable are they in their particular moments and contexts? When have social or political orders shifted their explanations for difference, or for criteria for what counts as difference and why? Together, the lectures will provide new insights into how humans have categorized, included and excluded individuals and groups over the past three centuries.
