The Hugo Valentin Centre invites everyone interested in the Balkans to attend three lectures by the renowned Dr. Xavier Bougarel of the Centre des études turques, ottomanes, balkaniques et centrasiatiques (CETOBAC), at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales, Paris. Dr. Bougarel is author and editor of several important works on the Balkans, including Bosnie: anatomie d'un conflit (Paris 1996), The New Bosnian Mosaic (Aldershot 2007) and Le Nouvel islam balkanique (Paris 2001). His research interests has focussed not least on the Muslims in former Yugoslavia, their history, politics and culture. He has also published extensively on the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the 1990s. Currently he is involved in a research project that investigates the 13th SS Division, Handžar, which was established by Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler in 1943, with soldiers from the Independent State of Croatia.
The lectures are organized in cooperation with the Department of History and will be held on 22, 27, 29 September 2011.
